The war in Afghanistan is frequently reported from the frontlines by journalists embedded with US and international forces. However, the war is almost never seen from the other side. Veteran Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi managed to embed himself with an insurgent cell closer to Al-Qaeda than are the Taliban, the notorious Hezb-i-Islam.
One of greatest challenges of this edit was to construct a seamless film from ‘home movie’ quality rushes. Every second of footage was poured across to give the viewer an intimate immersion in the daily lives of Afghan extremists.
Additionally I developed a workflow to instantaneously subtitle entire tapes. This enabled us to ensure the smallest pieces of humour, bickering and camaraderie, that can all too easily be lost in foreign language films, were captured in the edit.
